Men's Blues Training Camp 2022

January 9th-16th 2022 - Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, Switzerland

The Cambridge University Ice Hockey squad were hosted by Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz between 9th and 16th January for the annual training camp. The conditions were superb over the whole week with no snowfall, a lot of sunshine and cold temperatures favourable for training on the outdoor ice rink. In addition, the Lyceum sports hall and gym were available, so our 12 players underwent intense training with multiple on-ice and off-ice sessions per day. From the delicious meals in the dining hall to playing board games in the Convict, the team spent a lot of time together and bonded into a close-knit unit. Towards the end of the week the Cambridge students met the Lyceum students for a careers panel discussion. The grand finale was the traditional tournament on Saturday in which the Cambridge team faced the very talented team of Lyceum students, and the experienced team of Lyceum staff and friends. The training week is always an amazing experience for the team and we are grateful to Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz for nurturing this tradition and hosting us again.

Match Report: Men's Blues vs Imperial College London 10-1

November 20th - Imperial College London

After a convincing win against Sheffield, the Men’s blues ventured into London looking to capitalise on their momentum. Despite the recurring issue of illness and injury the team proved ready for the match.

Imperial opened the first period scoring on an unassisted breakaway. This was quickly answered by two goals (courtesy of Cambridge’s #88 Marty Limbäck-Stokin, assisted by #57 Evgeny Gorgachov and #29 Samu “Shamzy” Marosi). The Cambridge Blues extended their lead when charming and intellectual forward #47 Aiden Crawford-Tamasauskas (his words) buried a point shot from defenceman #34 Jonathan Parker. League’s all-time fastest skater in a straight line #19 Kumaran Nathan, assisted by #88 Limbäck-Stokin, extended the scoreline to 4-1. Hard forechecking and “sufficient” backchecking (#88) accelerated our resolve, having now solved the conundrum of Imperial breakaways.

At the start of period 2, #97 Ivan Grega decided to do what Ivan does best: skate, pass, grab an assist, when #29 Shamzy became wide open for a near-side shot: 5-1 for the Blues. Goal number 6 for Cambridge was scored by rising team attorney #47 Crawford-Tamasauskas (our words) and facilitated by an unusually selfless Limbäck-Stokin. This was aptly followed by a beautiful tape to tape pass from Goncharov after the restart to set up Marosi for goal 7. The imperial forwards could not find a way through the complex manifolds of the Cambridge defence led by Evgeny Gorgachov. A necessity, as Jonathan Parker decided to take a lone vacation to the sin bin.

Now deep into period 3 and not to be left off the gamesheet, #53 Jonathan “Konsey” König hit up #18 Tomos Griffiths in the corner for a cross-ice pass, resulting in a sensationalist finish from the eager long-hair, right-wing #68 Ryan Tan. The original long-hair, right-wing, #68 Jagr himself would be proud. Moments later, Ryan linked up once again with Konsey, and a reappearing Kumaran, to grab goal number 9 for the Blues with an unknown length of time left to play. Marty, yes #88 again, decided on pursuing an unassisted breakaway to complete his Hat-Trick and to send the Cambridge score into double figures. With the final whistle blown, the height of the score seemed only impeded by a running clock. Cambridge Men’s Blues 10, Imperial College London 1.

We are now one club!

The Men’s Blues, Women’s Blue and Huskies are proud and thrilled to announce that we have merged into a single club, under the historic name of Cambridge University Ice Hockey Club (CUIHC)!

To date, CUIHC has consisted of the Men’s Blues, and together with the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club is recognized as the longest ice hockey rivalry in the world. Founded in 1981, the Cambridge University Women’s Ice Hockey Club was a pioneer of women’s university ice hockey in the UK; it was one of only three all-women teams along with their Oxford counterparts. In recent years, the CUWIHC established a second mixed-gender development team -the Huskies.

The previous club names were understandably problematic as the CUWIHC had both male and female players while the CUIHC referred exclusively to the Men’s Blues. We are delighted to now be united as a club under the name of Cambridge University Ice Hockey Club.

The merging of the clubs consolidates efforts and resources to grow and promote ice hockey in Cambridge. This landmark change is beneficial for all teams, as it represents an important milestone in ensuring equality, inclusivity and diversity in sport and lays the foundation for a sustainable and successful future for Cambridge Ice Hockey.

Varsity 2021 Cambridge Women’s Blues/Huskies

June 26th 2021: Oxford Ice Rink

Cambridge 7-6 Oxford

This year the Women’s Blues and Huskies played together as a mixed-gender team against the Oxford Women’s Blues and the Oxford Vikings B.

It was the inaugural hockey match for some of our new players which was very exciting! After a disrupted season, it was great to be back on the ice (for the first time in months in some cases!). Adapting quickly to unfamiliar lines, the team played brilliantly and celebrated their only game of the 2021 season with a 7-6 win.

Varsity 2021 - Cambridge Men's Blues: Match Report

June 26th 2021: Oxford Ice Rink - 103rd Varsity Match

Cambridge 4-3 Oxford

(3-3 after regulation time, 3-4 for Cambridge after shootout)

Oxford started the game with 15 skaters while Cambridge had only 10. Cambridge managed to sustain Oxford’s pressure during two penalty kills at the start of the first period. Coming back in full strength, #68 Bryan Lehman scored the game opener after a breakaway pass from #47 Martti Palosuo. Cambridge dominated the game for the remainder of the first period and scored their second goal during power play. The Light Blues’ captain #97 Ivan Grega entered the Oxford zone, circled around the net, made a pass to #57 Evgeny Goncharov, who faked a shot and found assistant captain #88 Martin Limbäck-Stokin wide open for a one-timer. Cambridge suffered a substantial loss towards the end of the first period when #17 Rory Clark hit the ice after a hard collision and his chin was cut wide open and bleeding. The score was 2-0 after the first period.

Losing one player in the first period put Cambridge into a disadvantaged position. Playing with 9 players put the team out of rhythm, which was further worsened by numerous penalties. Oxford managed to tie the game by scoring two powerplay goals. The Light Blues bounced back when #68 Bryan Lehman picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, entered the zone, passed to assistant captain #88 Martin Limbäck-Stokin who took a shot, and subsequent rebounds by #68 and #26 Jonas Fiala found a way past the Oxford goalie. Score after the second period was 3-2.

Both teams entered the third period knowing the stakes were high. Cambridge did not restrain from taking further penalties and the penalty kills drained the Cambridge bench. Oxford managed to score the game equalizer. The Varsity Match would proceed into a five-minute overtime when the Light Blues took further penalties. With 7 skaters left to finish the game, they managed to sustain Dark Blue pressure thanks to a strong performance of Cambridge goalie #31 Matthew Neville who was the Oxford-chosen MVP for Cambridge. The game would be decided in the shootouts. Cambridge’s #22 Daniel Fisher scored two goals in his two attempts versus one goal for Oxford and was selected the overall game MVP. Cambridge won the 103rd Varsity Match 4-3 after shootouts.

Cambridge vs. Oxford: The Alumni Game

1st April 2017, Toronto, CA -- The 9th Annual Alumni game of Oxford v. Cambridge Ice Hockey Blues was a bit of a disappointment. After eight years of close games, with even results, this year Cambridge lost in a decisive manner. Although the score was lop-sided, the game was fairly evenly matched with both sides getting a good number of chances. Cambridge, unfortunately, could only get the puck past the Oxford goalie once during the game and, when under pressure in their own end, Cambridge simply did not do enough to clear the puck away from their own goalie.

Despite being outscored, the Cambridge players showed their class by continuing to battle to the final buzzer, and then later when they hosted the after-game event at the Park Hyatt organized by Cambridge in America. Winning a game lasts for only a season, as the Cambridge Blue Alumni will be back next year better than ever. Style, however, lasts forever.
